From Street Car to Track Monster: Dylan Boring's 850WHP Mitsubishi Evo 8

Meet Dylan Boring

"My name is Dylan Boring, and I'm from Zelienople, Pennsylvania. I've been passionate about cars for as long as I can remember. If I had to pinpoint where it all started, I'd say it was watching my older brother build his first few cars nearly 20 years ago. Seeing those projects come together sparked something in me, and I've been hooked ever since.

Today, my brother Josh and I run a part-time shop where we build our own cars and take on a handful of customer builds. Outside of the automotive world, I own and operate a new home construction company full-time. Building things has always been part of who I am—whether it's a house or a race car."

Why the Evo?

"My current drag car is a 2005 Mitsubishi Evo 8 that I purchased out of Texas in 2021. At the time, I already owned an Evo 10, and my brother had an Evo 9, so I've always been a fan of the Evo platform. When the opportunity came up to buy this Evo 8, I couldn't pass it up."

What started as a street car that I planned to take to the drag strip every once in a while quickly evolved into something much bigger.

The Build

Under the hood, the Evo is powered by a 2.2L stroker engine paired with:

  • Huy Tran Dogbox transmission
  • AGT 6866 turbocharger
  • Haltech ECU
  • Weld 15-inch wheels
  • Hoosier D06 26-inch tires

The car currently produces around 850 wheel horsepower at 38 PSI of boost.

One of the things that makes the car stand out most is its electric blue chassis. Combined with the custom Boosted Fabrication parachute mount and the extensive gold powder coating by Totally Baked Powder Coating, the car has a look that's hard to mistake for anything else.

Every bit of work on the car was completed by myself and my brother Josh. The tuning was handled by Michael Gombos of Gumby Tuned.

Built, Not Bought

The most rewarding part of this build is knowing that Josh and I put it together ourselves. While many race cars face constant setbacks, this Evo has stayed together remarkably well over the past few years.

Before the current setup, the car ran a 9.90-second quarter mile using an AGT 62mm turbo and a stock-synchro transmission. We have yet to fully test the latest combination, and we're excited to see what it can do.

From Street Car Dreams to Race Car Reality

When I first started the build, my goal was simple: create a fun street car that could occasionally hit the drag strip.

Well... I went too far.

These days, the car spends most of its life at the track, with the occasional appearance at a local car show to remind people what a four-cylinder engine is capable of. What I love most about the car is still its electric blue paint. Clean Evo 8s in that color are becoming harder and harder to find.

If I could change one thing, it would be swapping the Evo 8 front bumper for an Evo 9 front bumper.

And as for the biggest impact this car has had on my life?

My bank account.

Looking Ahead

The future plans for the Evo might surprise some people. The car is actually going back to its roots.

I'm planning to switch to a smaller turbo setup and make the car more street-friendly again so I can truly enjoy driving it. At the same time, I'm building a completely new shell dedicated to drag racing.

The goal is to have the new race car completed in time for the 33rd Annual DSM Shootout.

Interior and Driver Setup

Inside the Evo, you'll find:

  • Kirkey race seats
  • NRG quick-release steering wheel
  • Inline Racing lockout shifter
  • Haltech IC-7 digital dash

The interior is purpose-built for performance while maintaining a clean and functional appearance.

Favorite Memory

Out of all the memories I've made with this car, one stands above the rest.

The first time we finished the build and fired it up, the hood-dump exhaust was shooting massive fireballs. It was one of those moments that instantly reminds you why you love building cars. It was loud, wild, and unforgettable.

Community and Friendships

One of the best things this Evo has given me isn't horsepower or track times—it's the people.

Over the years, I've met countless friends through this car and through attending the DSM Shootout. The DSM and Evo communities are filled with passionate enthusiasts, and every event is a great time.

Advice for Future Builders

If there's one piece of advice I'd give anyone building a car, it's this:

Do it right the first time.

And even when you think you're doing it right, there's a good chance you'll end up redoing it later anyway. That's just part of the process.

This Evo 8 will always hold a special place in my heart. That's exactly why it's becoming a street car again. I want to put miles on it, enjoy it, and make more memories with it.

At the same time, I can't wait to see what the next build brings.
